PU IMMG and American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Organized “Agar Art Contest & Workshop 2025: Microbes Makes the World Go Round”

Lahore: (22nd October 2025): The Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (IMMG), University of the Punjab, and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) International Student’s Chapter, University of the Punjab, organized the Agar Art Contest & Workshop 2025 with the ASM’s theme “Microbes Make the World Go Round.” The event brought together microbiology students and researchers to explore the intersection of art and science, using living microbes as their artistic medium. Participants created vibrant agar-based artworks to highlight the vital roles microorganisms play in nature - from enriching soil and producing antibiotics to driving environmental balance. The workshop, featured hands-on practice, science communication sessions, and discussions on ethical and creative microbiological practices. Prof. Dr. Imran Sajid (Faculty Advisor, ASM–Punjab University Chapter) introduced participants to ASM’s global initiatives promoting microbiological research and outreach. Distinguished guests, including Prof. Dr. Muhammad Faisal (Director, IMMG) and Prof. Dr. Anjum Nasim Sabri (Chairperson, DPCC, University of the Punjab), encouraged students to enhance their laboratory and science communication skills while engaging the public with science in innovative ways. Dr. Mehboob Ahmed (Associate Professor) led an interactive session on the history and evolution of agar art. Students from University of the Punjab, Government College University Lahore (GCUL), University of Management and Technology (UMT), University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), and Gulab Devi Educational Complex presented their microbial artworks. The judging panel, comprising Prof. Dr. Abdul Rehman, Prof. Dr. Basharat Ali, Prof. Dr. Saba Riaz, Prof. Dr. Tahir Mehmood, and Dr. Warda Hasnain, evaluated all submissions based on scientific accuracy and artistic creativity. After a thorough assessment, the panel announced the winners. Iman Tanvir Malik and Fatima Hassan from IMMG, PU, secured the first position, receiving a cash prize of Rs. 8,000. The second position was awarded to the group of Rabia Shahdin, Yusra Waheed, and Aneeba Fatima (IMMG, PU), with a cash prize of Rs. 5,000. The third positions were shared by three groups: Tayyaba Zahid, Qurat-ul-Ain, and Abeera Imran (IMMG, PU); Muneeza Majid Butt, Areej Mazhar, and Dua Qaiser (CEMB & IMMG, PU); and Maham Akram (CEMB, PU – Individual Category), each receiving a cash prize of Rs. 3,000. The event highlighted the participants’ impressive blend of creativity and scientific understanding, making it a truly inspiring showcase of talent and innovation. All the winners were awarded with cash prizes and the contestants with appreciation certificates. The top entries will represent Pakistan in the International ASM Agar Art Contest 2025, providing students an opportunity to showcase their creativity on a global stage. The event reflected IMMG’s commitment to scientific innovation, creativity, and public engagement, proving that microbiology can be both artistic and inspiring.
